It's very inexpensive in Middle Eastern grocery stores but you can also find it in spice shops like Penzey's and The Spice House.

I recently bought some sumac and was really amazed at how much extra flavor it brought to the hummus. I wanted to post this to convince people who were just going to leave it out to buy some and try it if they can because it is definitely worth it!

This afternoon I made this recipe for hummus and then emidiatly made another batch with a few alterations as 2 tablespoons of lemon juice is way too much and made the hummus into lemon chickpea dip :(

We use frozen broccoli thawed in warm water. The freezing changes the "raw" texture just enough to blend really well, while keeping some of the live enzymes in play. I haven't seen anyone else doing this, so I was very pleased to read this recipe. :)

HI Susan,

How many calories per 1/2 cup (or whatever measurement you figure) ? When you switched programs, did your nutritional info get lost? Thanks!!

Victoria, the nutritional stats should be almost the same, though this recipe will make a little less than the cucumber hummus, so to be sure, measure it first and then divide it into 4 servings.

Thank you Susan. I don't see the nutritional info here, so it it basically the same at the cucumber hummus?

I'm glad you made it home with only a few injuries. Sheesh, when it rains it pours. And by the way, I'm in Texas, the same steam bath!

Victoria :)

Susan:
I LOVE all your recipes, mainly because they are healthy recipes that inspire other ideas for my own recipes. I am obsessed with nutrition, and I found that substituting some canned asparagus for a portion of the chickpeas helps reduce the calories without imparting too much flavor. It helps maintain the integrity of the hummus as it only adds subtle flavor (unless of course you want the asparagus to be more dominant in which case you can add more)! It also makes a great dressing for salads :)

I just steam the broccoli very lightly and add it a little at a time, to taste. You can also use raw broccoli, but I prefer the texture of steamed.
