Katie, if there's an Asian grocery store in your area, look there. They almost all have packages of agar powder at a very low price. I use the "Telephone" brand, which costs around $1.50 for several ounces.

I apologize if this topic was covered, but I'm wondering if there is a suitable substitute for agar? I looked everywhere in SLC and found a 1oz pack for $8. I guess I could make a special occasion pie but any less expensive solution would be great.
Thank you!
