I didn't have all the spices, but I found a Penzy's spice mix called "Sweet Curry" that I had that had them all in it - it sure did the trick! I put about 3 tbs and added more ginger, a flavor I adore. So excited to make this!

If you live in New York, Kalustyan's on Lexington Avenue and 29th street has Berbere mixture (made in the store) in 4 oz packages. I believe they ship too! But when I finish my pre-made stuff I'm making mine from scratch from this recipe.

Tried the dish today, I used green lentils instead of red.I added curry leaves, cumin seeds, fresh cardamon seeds and more masala powder.. it tasted and smelled so great. Brought it at work with me and it was an instant hit with my Indian co- workers..It's gonna be my regular dish from now on.. thanks

This and the green beans and potatoes is one of the best dishes I have ever tried. Yummers. I can't imagine how to improve upon it. I was lucky enough to get some fresh baked injera too, which made a perfect meal.

Great recipe! Goes well with the Ethiopian Green Beans and Potatoes (link right below the picture). My local Ethiopian grocery store sells great berbere. I also add pureed onion and extra berbere.

BE CAREFUL. if you have clovey allspice this dish will be INEDIBLE!!

We had to throw most of this away and start over. Best luck would be to not add cloves at all, and less allspice.

Cook longer, lentils don't get soft in the time suggested

I made this tonight, and it is heavenly. I didn't have the cardamom or the fenugreek, but it turned out just fine. Also, since I wasn't sure I'd like the spice mixture, I cut that part of the recipe in half... then used all of it up. I will definitely be making this again.
