Oops, I was distracted and popped the whole spice mix in before reading the '1-2tsp of spice'...
I added another 1/2 tin of tomatoes and the extra spice was brilliant! Our 3 year old loved it with some rice, wraps and veggie kabobs <3
Thanks for sharing this GREAT recipe!

I thought you should know that for some reason, this recipe does not turn up when I search on your site for "red lentil," "Ethiopian," or even "Berbere." Those searches do turn up your "Ethiopian night" page, which has a link to this page. But for some reason this page itself is not included in the search results.

Great site, by the way. Really appreciate what you're doing, on several levels!!! (The food is really great, too!)

This stew has wonderful flavor! It's so simple, but very satisfying. Based on commenter suggestions, I reduced the cloves by about half, and I was quite happy. I used regular brown lentils, as I was out of red lentils. I'm storing my leftover berbere spice mix in a jam jar, as I know I'll be making this again.

I didn't have all the spices, but I found a Penzy's spice mix called "Sweet Curry" that I had that had them all in it - it sure did the trick! I put about 3 tbs and added more ginger, a flavor I adore. So excited to make this!

If you live in New York, Kalustyan's on Lexington Avenue and 29th street has Berbere mixture (made in the store) in 4 oz packages. I believe they ship too! But when I finish my pre-made stuff I'm making mine from scratch from this recipe.

Tried the dish today, I used green lentils instead of red.I added curry leaves, cumin seeds, fresh cardamon seeds and more masala powder.. it tasted and smelled so great. Brought it at work with me and it was an instant hit with my Indian co- workers..It's gonna be my regular dish from now on.. thanks

This and the green beans and potatoes is one of the best dishes I have ever tried. Yummers. I can't imagine how to improve upon it. I was lucky enough to get some fresh baked injera too, which made a perfect meal.
